Some words about this recording from Dan Tucker:
"Each is a work of total musical integrity, with no virtuoso
stunting for its own sake. In each the orchestra, not the soloist, is often the
leading voice; the violin decorates and expands on the themes stated in strings
and woodwinds. The middle movements are marvels of singing tenderness, and the
final movements are for dancing--Beethoven's a buoyant jig, Brahms's a folk frolic
with Hungarian Ancestry. The concertos of these two mighty musicians honor each
other. Both works are based on classical models, and the similarities may be largely
coincidence. Still, Brahms liked to run up Beethoven's flag beside his own; perhaps
he was doing it here. Brahms may have had his contradictions, but as a composer
he was at home in two worlds, and his music makes us welcome in both."
