Acclaim
Internationally acclaimed as one of the great violinists of our time, Aaron Rosand is renowned
as an artist of unique personal style. He is repeatedly compared to such legends
as Heifetz, Milstein, Francescatti, Elman, Kriesler and Ysaye and is noted for
his interpretations of the 19th century repertoire. Recently celebrating his 80th birthday,
Rosand still concertizes, but primarily focuses on passing on his technique to a new generation of
players... see cover story in the September, 2007 issue of
The Strad.
Known foremost for his recordings, audiophiles and devotees of the violin have followed his artistry carefully
since the release of his first acclaimed LP on VOX in 1961, of the complete
Beethoven Sonatas. With the advent of the CD and the resulting re-issue of more
than twelve Rosand recordings, a resurgence of interest in this legendary "violinist's
violinist" prompted the release of many new recordings, including
sonatas of Franck, Brahms and Beethoven, the
Sibelius/Khatchaturian and Beethoven/Brahms violin concertos, and the complete
Bach Solo Sonatas and Partitas.
Then,
in celebration of his 75th birthday, Vox Music Group released three new CDs,
Glazunov, Bruch and
Live Bruch/Paganini. Other recordings of the time
including the 2002 My Legacy CD (see our discography page for complete
recording listings). Aaron Rosand celebrates his 80th birthday on March 15, 2007. His recent releases, which
include his first recital DVD and the two-cd set of vintage recordings Aaron Rosand in Norway have both
received critical acclaim as well. The Recital DVD received a
Davey Award for Artistic Excellence in Entertainment,
and the CD was awarded a JPF Music Award for Best Classical Concerto Album in November, 2006.
In March 2007, at a celebratory concert at the Curtis Institute marking Rosand's 80th birthday,
Rosand was presented with a citation from Mayor Street on behalf of the City of
Philadelphia [more].
A Sampling of Quotes...
- "Every now and then a release comes along that reminds you
what a superb violinist Aaron Rosand is, and this is one of them. All these performances
are so good that if you only had them and no other recordings of the works, you wouldn't be
missing much. Rosand supplies all the tonal richness, nuance, and stylistic sensitivity that these
works need." (American Record Guide, 2005)
- "Some of his best recordings are of very recent vintage. A recital filmed in California last fall, featuring remarkably assured and sensitive playing, will be out on DVD - his first - next month, released by Video Artists International (VAI)... ...delivered with technical aplomb and, above all, exquisitely tasteful, old-world style." -
(Baltimore Sun, 2004)
- "Aaron Rosand is an extraordinary violinist--he has made some of the greatest
recordings of this century" (Gramophone Magazine)
- "(his recordings) have become synonymous with immaculate
technical achievement, beautiful multi-coloured tonal lustre, artful phrasing,
stylistic elan and probing musical intellect." (Strad Magazine)
- "one of the great living exponents
of Romantic violin music." (Harold Schoenberg)
- "Rosand is one of the world's patrician artists, a musician filled with
a deep sense of something far too often missing among today's violinists, a
true awareness of style. His technical resources match those of any of the
big names in the violin world. His tone is something many of them covet, a thing
of multi-colored beauty, lithe and live, shining and shadowy, according to the
music he is playing at the moment." (Washington Post)
- "powerful, expressive manner of playing,
reminiscent of (his) old friend, Eugene Ysaye." (Pablo Casals)
- "Rosand's distinctive silvery tonal sheen
and warmth of tone in even the most brilliant of spiccato passages is reminiscent
of Milstein. In terms of aristocratic purity, there are times when Heifetz is
brought to mind, yet there is an inner intensity, noblesse and intuitiveness
which are unique." (CD Magazine)
- "Aaron Rosand is one of our greatest violinists, whether you know him or not... "
